PROJECT OVERVIEW
Creating high-quality product images for customizable football apparel traditionally requires significant manual design effort. Each shirt variation needs a new background setup, careful alignment, and professional compositing making catalog expansion slow and resource-intensive.
To solve this, we built an AI-powered image generation and compositing automation using n8n, AI image models, and cloud-based image transformation tools.
The system dynamically generates realistic football shirt backgrounds using AI, removes backgrounds from standardized product images, and composites both into a final e-commerce-ready output, automatically.
The result is a scalable, repeatable image production pipeline designed for fast-growing apparel brands.

THE SOLUTION ARCHITECTURE (HOW DOES IT WORK?)
By combining AI-powered background generation, automated background removal, and dynamic image compositing, all orchestrated through n8n, the system transforms static product assets into scalable, dynamic visual content.
How does it work?
Step 1: Workflow Trigger
A manual or test trigger initiates the workflow with multiple shirt references or image URLs for batch processing.
Step 2: AI Background Generation
An AI model such as Google Gemini or Stability AI generates realistic football shirt backgrounds based on prompts or references.
Step 3: Background Upload & Hosting
The generated background image is uploaded to Cloudinary, producing a secure hosted URL.
Step 4: Product Image Preparation
The standardized product image (name & numbers) is processed using Photoroom to remove its background, resulting in a clean transparent PNG.
Step 5: Overlay Upload
The transparent product image is uploaded to Cloudinary as a separate asset.
Step 6: Automated Image Compositing
Cloudinary transformations dynamically overlay the product image onto the AI-generated background with precise scale, alignment, and positioning.
Step 7: Data Merging & Formatting
n8n merges background, overlay, and final composite image URLs using JavaScript logic for structured output.
Step 8: Catalog Storage
The final composite image URL is stored in Airtable for catalog management and reuse.
